I recently shared on my Instagram stories that I stumbled upon a clever way to make back some of what I owe in taxes this year...by using a new credit card offering a signup bonus as a way to meet the minimum spend.
This card would be perfect since it offers a 75,000 welcome bonus after spending $3k on the card, plus 2x points per dollar spent. That means if your tax bill is $5k, you can get an additional 10,000 points per dollar spent for a total of 85,000 points, which you can transfer to an airline partner like Flying Blue's Air France.
I bring up this specific example since my mom and I are flying to Europe this summer for 85k points each in Air France's business class, and I couldn't be more excited! Given this flight's cash price is $4000, that's a nice way to pay myself back for paying my taxes.
Now I wouldn't consider this a great deal if I were just paying taxes with a credit card and not trying to get a bonus, considering the charge is 1.85%. But if I'm trying to earn a bonus for a brand new card, in our example of a $5000 tax bill, that would be a $92.50 charge, which is worth flying business class to me!
