Many credit cards tout travel insurance as a big benefit of signing up for their cards.
I'm into travel hacking, and I fly business as much as possible on points. Building points and finding deals is kind of like playing chess to me. This means I have several cards with the major players, and recently, I relied on Chase insurance for one of my trips.
It turns out I really shouldn't have.
My son got really sick while we were in Indonesia. My partner and I decided to hightail it to Singapore where I know they have great medical care. Chase's underwriter, eClaimlsine insurance, does not cover any medical bills, but I thought they at least covered trip cancellation for a covered reason, which ours was. We had all the documentation, and I submitted it right when it all happened.
Six months later and an endless circle of them asking for the same documents over and over, I finally filed a CFPB complaint against Chase and the final resolution was that the insurance "didn't cover hotels." When I searched on Reddit, I found SO many people saying the same happened to them.
I'm still wondering why they needed endless documents from me if they knew from the beginning I was looking to get reimbursed for hotels. But I can tell you one thing, I will never rely on them again.
So do any cards have good insurance? Message boards suggest that this card actually pays out for missed flights. Since they offer 5x points for flights when booked directly with the airline, I always use it when booking flights, so that was good news.
But now that I know the limitations, I'm opting for one company I actually did have a good experience with when I had to see a doctor in Japan. They chatted with me in the app and paid out immediately. They're a rare insurance company that actually has good trustpilot reviews. It costs something while credit card insurance is 'free', but what good is free if it doesn't work?
