Peru unveiled

Peru is one of those countries that has a magical quality to it.

From ancient ruins to mystical mountains to unique cultures, there are so many reasons why Peru ranks high on our list of favorite countries.

Here are five reasons why we think Peru is so damn cool:

1. Alpacas

Three-quarters of the world's alpaca population live in Peru!

If you've ever visited Machu Picchu, or seen a pictures of it, you've seen the herd that lives on-site!

2. UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Peru is home to 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the city of Cusco and Machu Picchu, both of which are visited on our Machu Picchu & Peru trip!

3. Let's get DEEP

One of the deepest canyon in the world is found in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

Measuring down almost 11,600 feet, the Cotahuasi Canyon is nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.

4. Three official languages

If you visit Peru, you will encounter the spoken language of Spanish...but did you know that Quechua and Aymara are also official languages of Peru?

If you venture further east into the Amazon jungle, there are another 13 indigenous languages spoken amongst the natives.

5. It's a bird, it's a plane...

No wait, it's actually a bird! The largest bird on the planet is found in Peru, more specifically, in Colca Canyon.

With a wingspan of up to 14 feet, the Giant Andean Condor is considered sacred by Peruvians, though it is unfortunately listed as "vulnerable' by the World Conservation Union.
